Vinyl liners: why epoxy putty is the wrong tool here

We get letters at the Mertztown plant asking why a cured lump of Epoxybond Pool Putty fell off a tear in a vinyl liner. The customer mixed the material properly, kneaded out the marbling, and pressed it down underwater. The patch felt like rock within two hours. A few weeks later, the lump was sitting on the pool floor and the tear was leaking again.

The material did not fail. It did exactly what we formulated it to do. Epoxybond cures to a rigid thermoset solid with a compressive strength of 8000 psi and a tensile strength of 1600 psi. That rigidity is why it works so well on cracked concrete, chipped ceramic tile, and rigid PVC fittings. It is also the exact reason it cannot hold on a vinyl pool liner.

The problem with a rigid patch on a membrane

A pool liner is a thin membrane held under tension by thousands of gallons of water. It stretches, shrinks, and shifts constantly as water temperature rises and falls. When swimmers jump into the pool, the vinyl flexes against the sand or vermiculite base beneath it.

Our putty cures hard. It has a shrinkage rate of about 1 percent and stays rigid across its entire service life. When you stick a rock-hard puck of cured epoxy onto a flexible sheet under tension, the two materials fight each other every time the liner moves.

The bond edge takes the full brunt of that movement. Because the cured epoxy cannot stretch with the vinyl, stress concentrates right along the perimeter of the patch. The bond opens at the edges, water slips underneath, and the hardened slug pops off completely.

Surfaces our material actually bonds to

We have made corrosion-resistant cements and epoxies here in Pennsylvania since Maximillian F. Wirtz started the company in 1892. In 1949, we introduced ALFANE, the first epoxy mortar sold in the United States. We understand adhesion on rigid substrates, and our data sheet is clear about where our pool putty belongs.

  • Concrete, gunite, and marcite or pebble plaster with a bond strength of 400 psi.
  • Ceramic waterline tiles and pool coping stones.
  • Fiberglass gelcoat, provided you scuff the surface dull first to remove the gloss.
  • Clean metal fittings and skimmer faceplates abraded bright before application.
  • Rigid PVC pipe and plastic skimmer bodies with the smooth mold finish sanded away.

Notice what those materials have in common: they are solid, structural surfaces that do not stretch under tension. The vinyl liner is the one pool surface we explicitly tell customers to avoid.

Use solvent-welded vinyl patches instead

If you have a hole or a slit in a vinyl liner, you need a dedicated vinyl repair kit. A proper vinyl repair uses a piece of flexible PVC sheeting and a solvent-based adhesive that fuses the patch directly into the liner material.

That solvent weld softens the chemical faces of both sheets so they fuse into a single continuous piece of vinyl. The resulting patch stretches, flexes, and bends along with the surrounding pool wall as temperatures cycle, preventing stress from building up along the seam.

We do not make vinyl patch kits. We will not sell you Epoxybond for a job it cannot do. Buy a flexible PVC repair kit from a pool supply house instead.

Other pool repairs our putty will not fix

Vinyl liners are not the only pool issue where epoxy is the wrong choice. Our data sheet carries a clear reminder: NOT INTENDED FOR STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS. If your pool shell has cracked because the ground shifted, epoxy cannot hold the structure together.

Epoxy putty will also fail if you try to pack it over an active, pressurized leak. The water pressure behind the hole simply blows the uncured putty out of the joint before it reaches initial set. It will not work in expansion joints either, because expansion joints must move freely as the deck expands in summer heat.

If your pool is losing multiple inches of water every day, do not start packing putty into random corners. You likely have broken underground plumbing or a major structural failure, and putty will not find or fix that problem for you.

Save the Epoxybond for rigid work. Keep the 2 oz Single-Stick, 4 oz Single-Stick, or 14 oz 2-Part Set on hand for cracked main drains, chipped plaster steps, loose tiles, or abraded skimmer throats where you can cut a sound joint at least 1/8 inch deep and pack the putty into a solid, unyielding surface.
